Earlier this month Unity Technologies was proud to release Unity iPhone 1.7, another important and exciting update to our iPhone development tool set. As always, minor-version updates like this are free for existing license holders – no hassles. This new release provides developers with a few important new features related to Apple’s latest device, the iPad! The new features found in Unity iPhone 1.7 are:
Support for iPad Deployment
Developers will now be able to select the iPad as a deployment target in both Unity iPhone Basic and Unity iPhone Advanced!
Support for the iPad Simulator
The new release adds iPad Simulator support so you can develop iPad apps even if you do not have the hardware itself.
Support for Universal Applications
With Unity iPhone you can now optionally build universal applications so your apps will automatically work on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
As you might expect there are other improvements to be found in this release and you can learn all about them by visiting our website today: What’s New in Unity iPhone 1.7. Once again, please remember that this is a free update for existing license holders, just download the new build and get started with the new features!
A Brief Word About Apple iPhone OS 4
As most folks already know, Apple introduced a new Terms of Service (ToS) with their iPhone OS 4 that has some Unity users concerned. While we don’t yet have a definitive statement to share at this time, we have a healthy, ongoing dialogue with Apple and it seems clear that it’s not their intention to block Unity and will continue our efforts to ensure compliance with the Terms. While it’s possible that ensuring compliance could mean additional engineering on our part, our committed goal is to provide you with uninterrupted ToS compliant tools and we think we’ll be able to do that.
If you want to stay up-to-date on our official response to this situation then please keep an eye on our company blog, and in particular posts from our CEO David Helgason: Unity Technologies Blog » David Helgason. We want to thank everyone out there for their patience while we work through these changing circumstances. We know it’s difficult to proceed with uncertainty, we’re doing all we can to ensure a positive outcome.
As always we want to thank everyone for using Unity and we wish you all the best in everything you do!
On behalf of the Unity team,
